How I Use Craft for Personal Idea/Knowledge Management

There’s a new app on the note-taking scene, Craft. Unlike many of its competitors in the new wave of personal knowledge management (aka smart notes, zettelkasten, evergreen notes, second brain, etc), Craft has native apps for both macOS and iOS. That means you get the same beautiful feature-rich experience whether you’re typing on your MacBook, iPad, or iPhone. A lot of care went into the design of these apps—they are simply a joy to use.

This is my process.

Daily Notes

In addition to bidirectional linking — a now essential feature in these apps — the other killer feature that Roam Research brought to the Zettelkasten zeitgeist is Daily Notes.

One of the hardest things in programming is naming things, and it’s true with notes as well. Often you will have a fleeting thought or underdeveloped idea, worth of documenting, but with no obvious place to do so. But with daily notes, no naming required! Dates and bidirectional links provide the context needed for later discovery.

This later discovery becomes a clue for thoughts you should elevate to more permanence. Some ideas will flow away down the river, and that’s okay. Cream rises to the top, and the best ideas will return as you continue to write and use notes.
